Are you watching the TV or is it watching you?
The latest 8 Series TV sets for 2012 include voice and motion control, with an integrated camera that can watch your movements – allowing you to control the TV with the power of your voice, or movement.
The camera also allows you to talk to friends using Skype, including video calling. Where better to make a call than in the comfort of your living room on the sofa?
Naturally, there’s a price to pay for going for the top-end, which means you can also look at the cheaper 6 Series models that do away with the camera and might be favoured by those who can’t quite picture themselves waving their hands about at the TV or shouting to change channel.
Updating is a (r)evolution
Samsung is already kitting out its 2012 Smart TVs with a high specification, but what about this time next year – or the year after that? People own a television for up to seven years before replacing it, so why should you be stuck with a Smart TV that is outdated despite still offering an exceptional picture?
With the launch of the Evolution Kit, Samsung will offer owners of the high-end sets (the ES8000 models) the ability to upgrade the hardware. Although there are no prices or details of what the upgrades will bring, it is clear that it will be far cheaper than replacing the entire television.
As long as you’re happy with the picture quality (and on these high-end panels, it’s hard to imagine you wouldn’t be) then upgrading seems the most sensible option – and it’s better for the environment too.
Smart Hub
Samsung’s Smart Hub is now standard on most of the new televisions, and if you’re paying upwards of £1,000 for a new set for the living room, why wouldn’t you want to have access to services like iPlayer, ITV Player, Netflix, Lovefilm and more?
All of the new Smart TVs from Samsung also include Wi-Fi, with support for Wi-Fi Direct and AllSharePlay that allows you to mirror your phone or tablet display on the big screen.
The 2012 models also come with dual-core processing power, with the 8 Series models offering the Evolution Kit upgrades that will bring quad-core power from early 2013.
