Direct sales system gets backing

On Wednesday during the opening of the Sasini Coffee Mills in Kiambu the head of state backed the direct sales system of coffee sales instead of the current weekly Nairobi Coffee Exchange that is not operational.He said that the weekly Nairobi Coffee Exchange denied the farmers maximise on the best prices in the market due to the existence of middlemen. On the other hand the president backed the direct sales system for coffee sales to buyer abroad as it attracts better prices when compared to the singles system currently in use that denied the farmers the chance to maximise on best prices.He said farmers should forge partnerships to land on the best prices. Statistics show that a kilo of coffee fetched $ 8.5 when sold through the direct sales system which was 40% above the prices from the local auction system.Data shows that 50 kgs of coffee were sold through direct sales system during the period ended 2010/11 which represents 8% of the coffee marketed.
